About Membership

What do I get when I join?

When you become a member of our CSF you gain full access to everything Port Orford’s family owned boats fish for – which is a lot!

Lingcod, Sablefish, Rockfish (several species), Albacore Tuna, Chinook Salmon, Pacific Halibut, Dungeness Crab, Cabezon, Skate… and MORE.

At sign up, Members make a commitment to buy one hundred dollars – or more – in Port Orford caught seafood. This one hundred dollar “share” serves as your starting balance. Members spend that balance down as they pick out what they place orders from our digital seafood marketplace. You can spend your entire one hundred dollar share over one month, or stretch it out over the course of the year. You can always add money into your account if you run out. Piece of cake. Returning Members make a two hundred dollar commitment.

Every Monday we send you an e-mail to let you know what we’ve been up to and what is fresh into the store. This serves as a cue to place an order if you want to. We then deliver once every other month to a neighborhood pick-up point near you.

That’s our system for getting as much Oregon caught seafood into as many Oregon Homes as we can.

Do I need to be a member?

No, we ship select items such as the Black Cod Box and apparel direct to your door.

Visit the Oregon stores listed above under “Where Can I Buy Port Orford Sustainable Seafood?” and try us out. If you select their links you can check out their other offerings.

Though, if you want access to the full array of the seafood caught in Port Orford… then yes!

Does my annual share expire?

Yes. We ask that you spend your balance by the December delivery to your area. Members then need to renew their membership for the following year.

What happens with unused share credits?

Members should spend their share credits by, or before their scheduled December delivery. Unused share credits are rolled over into the following years balance when you renew. If you don’t renew, we will donate your balance to our local Common Good Food Pantry.

What is a share credit?

When you join you select the size of your share, this money becomes your balance within your own private member account. You use your balance to purchase items from within our online store, ‘The Dock’.

Seafood & Sourcing

What kinds of seafood can I expect to choose from?

Many fisheries are seasonal, but Port Orford boats are fishing year round and bring to shore a huge array of species with different fish yielding special cuts. Here’s a primer on the toothsome flavors members get to select from:

  • Albacore Tuna Loins, Albacore Tuna Belly, Shelf Stable Tuna Pouches
  • Cabezon
  • Chinook Salmon Filet, Salmon Trim, Smoked Salmon Collars
  • Dungeness Crab – Whole and Meat
  • Halibut, Halibut Cheeks, Halibut Trim
  • Lingcod and Lingcod Cheeks
  • Giant Pacific Octopus
  • Rockfish
  • Sablefish and Smoked Sable
  • Skate

How are you different?

Our friends and family fish year round for a variety of species using hook-and-line which limits negative impacts to the ecosystem.

They handle each fish individually, promptly ice them, and then land them in Port Orford.

Once on land, we fillet, vacuum-seal, and blast freeze in order to preserve that catch day freshness!

Each package is labeled with the captain and name of the fishing vessel who caught it, providing you with 100% traceability.

We provide personal attention to all of our CSF members – you’re what keeps Port Orford fishing!

We deliver your seafood to Community Partner locations around the state using our freezer van ensuring your seafood never leaves our control. We ARE the supply chain!

Why do you blast freeze our fillets?

This rapid freezing process reduces the size of ice crystals and causes less damage to cell membranes. By vacuum-sealing and flash freezing, the freshness of each fish is locked in ensuring a higher quality product, and gives you the consumer more flexibility in deciding when to enjoy the seafood. According to the FDA, in order for fish to be ‘sushi’ or ‘sashimi-grade’ it must be frozen at an ambient temperature of -31 degrees Fahrenheit or below until solid and stored at an ambient temperature of -4 degrees Fahrenheit or below for a minimum of 24 hours. Thus, all of our fish is sashimi grade.

How are you sustainable?

Our claim to sustainability is based off what it means to fish out of Port Orford – preserving small-boat, family-operated fishing.

There are two large yellow cranes, known locally as ‘The Hook’, which lift every boat in and out of the water every time they go fishing. The larger of the two has a lift capacity of 25-tons which immediately is a limiting factor. This crane limits the amount of onboard weight each boat can carry making it impossible to tow nets and fish out of Port Orford. It also keeps the size of our boats relatively small leading to shorter fishing trips ultimately shortening the time period between when each fish is caught and when it is filleted, vacuum sealed, and blast frozen. It’s that time out of water that makes all the difference. Because of these things, you can feel good about buying seafood from any fishing vessel in Port Orford.

What is the serving size?

During processing, we portion each fillet into approximate 1lb portions, and generally accept a weight variance of .85lbs to 1.15lbs.
