Handling & Thawing your Seafood

Frozen is Best

Your fish has been handled with care since it came out of the ocean.

All our seafood is sashimi grade. Flash freezing ensures that your seafood tastes as fresh as the day it was caught. With a little care, it will get to your plate with that catch day freshness intact!

When you pickup your share of Port Orford Sustainable Seafood, it will need to be placed back in a freezer within 40 minutes to prevent thawing. We recommend bringing a small cooler or insulated bag for pickup.

As long as it stays frozen, and the seal is not compromised your seafood will last indefinitely.

How to Thaw

We highly recommend thawing your fish overnight in the refrigerator for the next evening’s dinner. This is the best way to preserve the taste and texture of your fish.

DO NOT thaw your fish in warm water or the microwave. This will damage the taste and texture.

We know you’re busy and sometimes thawing the night before is not an option. Another recommended method is to let the vacuum-sealed package of frozen fish sit under a lightly running stream of cold water, or in a bowl of cold water. It may take up to 90 minutes to thaw a one pound fillet.

Ready to Eat

Once thawed, remove seafood from packaging and wash off any liquid that may have gathered.

Remember, all our seafood is sashimi grade, which means that it is safe to eat without cooking at all. For your enjoyment, please take care to not overcook your fish. Click here to learn more about handling and thawing frozen seafood.
